September 2008FINAL CUT'S AKIKO IWAKAWA PARTNERS WITH DIRECTOR NAGI NODA & BBH ON WHIMSICAL SPOT FOR LG
Final Cut Editor Akiko Iwakawa completed a whimsical and imaginative spot for LG's Steam Washer, directed by Partizan's Nagi Noda and created by BBH NY. "World of Steam" features crinkled characters, which inhabit an enchanted white landscape of mountains and trees made from fabric. A steam train dashes through the crumpled terrain, smoothing out the mountains along the way. The spot concludes with the motion graphics, "Wrinkles are overpowered in the world of steam." For Iwakawa, the project was an opportunity to team up with Director Nagi Noda again. The two had worked together on a music video for Cut Copy's "Heart's on Fire." Noda, based in Tokyo, contacted Iwakawa early on in the process for help with the treatment. "I'm a huge fan of Nagi's work and was excited that she was directing this spot," says Iwakawa. "She is crafty and has a huge imagination. The concept here is whimsical and wild at the same time. There is a child-like and hand-made quality to the spot, which worked beautifully." Visit Final Cut
SUPERFAD ENJOYS MENTAL OVERLOAD WITH NEW CHANNEL 5 COMMERCIAL
Superfad's London office produced a branding project for Channel 5, which unites live action and CG in a playful and cheeky spot that showcases the notion and effect of "indulgent TV." The script, written and directed by Superfad London EP/CD Georgia Cooke, centers on three Channel Five TV addicts who -- with the launch of the Demand Five download service -- binge all night on their favorite shows and blitz-out in entertainment overload the next day on the boss' dollar. The viewing audience journeys from a shot of the near-unconscious characters to a live action spiraling zoom into their stylized, animated brains, brimming with a personalized selection of over-consumption. "Working with Channel 5 was amazing. They were completely open to any and all ideas surrounding the indulgent theme and we had a great time bringing the selected script to life," says Cooke, who launched Superfad London in May 2007 after serving as Creative Director at MTV Europe for over 10 years. KABOOM'S BRANDON DICKERSON & THE TJ DJ SPIN A TASTY NEW CAMPAIGN
Taco Johns is a brand that has earned a loyal and bold following. So it is no surprise that when agency Preston Kelly (formerly Kerker) decided to develop an ongoing advertising campaign to follow the success of the Taco Johns Whiplash The Cowboy Monkey, it sought a spokesperson that embodies this consumer passion. The TJ DJ is just that -- an affable uber fan who dedicates creative efforts to espouse the merits of his beloved Taco Johns. To cast this unique character and produce the inaugural campaign, agency Preston Kelly turned to kaboom productions and Cannes Lion-winning director brandon dickerson. In the inaugural spot, ardent music fans are camped outside an arena, waiting to buy concert tickets when a funky van bearing the words "TJ DJ" cruises into the parking lot. Adding a little spice to the traditional taco truck, this DJ-on-wheels awakens the senses of the breakfast-starved, sleep-deprived fans, reminding them that even the most die-hard shouldn't miss breakfast - especially the "best breakfast burritos in town . . ." "This was an amazing opportunity to collaborate with the agency to develop the TJ DJ, cast the perfect person for the role, and direct his performance," says dickerson. "In everything I've directed - from music videos to commercials - I've always focused on the nuance of performance to enhance narrative and develop character. Here, I was able to participate on an even greater scale by helping to cast a person who will potentially live the role for years to come. It's been an exceptional experience." Visit kaboom
THE LANGUAGE OF CHINESE CURRENCY MAKES FOR A PROVOCATIVE MAIN TITLE BY IMAGINARY FORCES
Design and production company Imaginary Forces (IF) created the main titles for "People's Republic of Capitalism," a four-part documentary in the Koppel On Discovery series that focuses on China's new role in the world. Spearheaded by creative director Karin Fong, "People's Republic of Capitalism" is the 6th show that IF has done for Koppel On Discovery. The title sequence is an explosion of China chic -- lush, intricate and colorful engravings, inspired by Chinese money, tweaked with symbols of present-day industry, fashion, and culture. "We brought the results of nearly a year of research, reporting and production on our China project to Karin Fong and the Imaginary Forces team," says Peter Demchuk, a producer for Koppel on Discovery. "And we offered a title we hoped would capture a sense of the transformation and contradiction we discovered there. Karin came up with 45 seconds of visual poetry that sums up perfectly our four-hour documentary series. Both elegantly simple and richly layered, the sequence creates the perfect frame for our program, but stands alone as its own remarkable piece of work." |
