October 2005ZOIC FLIES HIGH WITH "SERENITY" -- Joss Whedon-Helmed Universal Feature Film Continues Long-Standing Collaboration with Zoic Team
"I cannot thank Joss Whedon and John Swallow enough for allowing Zoic to participate on 'Serenity,'" says Peristere. "This was a very personal film for all of us. On 'Firefly' Joss and Tim Minear made us feel like partners in the storytelling process, and on 'Serenity' we worked as a family. We have never committed to any other project with as much emotion and vigor as we did on the film. It will always be a foundation project for Zoic and we are eternally grateful." "Serenity" centers on Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. When Mal takes on two new passengers--a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister--he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. *"Serenity" is written and directed by Joss Whedon; produced by Barry Mendel; and executive-produced by Christopher Buchanan, David Lester and Alisa Tager. Just after garnering multiple BDA Awards for Comedy Central's 2004 Re-Design, INTERspectacular, represented by New York-based production and entertainment firm Curious Pictures, is writing and directing for "Art: 21 -- Art in the Twenty-First Century," which will premiere its third season on PBS this Fall. The award-winning, New York-based concept and design boutique was invited by "Art: 21" Executive Producer Susan Sollins to create a series of "opens" for the four, one-hour programs. A true departure from their creative for Comedy Central, the PBS opens rely solely on the company's live-action production expertise, and were written, directed and produced by INTERspectacular. Each 45-second open features a unique theme, and highlights a different celebrity, including David Alan Grier. Isabella Rosellini, Sam Waterston and Grant Hill; and are slated to air September through October. "Beginning with Season 1 of "Art: 21" in 2001, the 'host opens' have been an unusual and exciting component of each hour-long program," says Susan Sollins, Executive Producer for "Art: 21." "Having experimented with video artists in the first two seasons, I wanted to add a new component in Season 3 by turning to a creative team with experience in the commercial field. INTERspectacular's talent for 'short form' information delivery is really translating into fresh and inventive introductory opens." In addition to currently working on the PBS "Art: 21" project, INTERspectacular has just completed a promotional campaign for Bill Maher's upcoming comedy special for HBO, and a promotional spot for "Most Haunted" on The Travel Channel, which are currently airing. And it was just announced that four of INTERspectacular's animated pieces for Comedy Central ("Robogirl," "Alphonse and Orville," "Monster Munchies," and "Stumpy") have been accepted into the prestigious Ottawa Animation Festival, taking place in September. Like last year, the Blue Cross/Blue Shield ever-present, pro-active helping hand, a "blue arm," intervenes in a variety of scenarios to encourage healthy practices and to emphasize the "everywhere-ness" of Blue. In "Snack," an office worker ponders the company snack machine and chooses a danish. The blue arm, hiding inside the machine, snatches the Danish as it falls from its perch, then offers the young man a healthy banana instead. The spot concludes with the end tag: "The Weight Management Program. Always working to keep you healthy." Followed by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield logo. In "Milk," a father paces the kitchen trying to console his crying baby. He picks up a heated bottle from the stove. The blue arm suddenly appears. The father should test the milk's temperature first! The blue arm extends its wrist. The father tests, and upon getting the thumb's up sign from the blue arm he quiets the crying child with the bottle. The spot concludes with the end tag: "The right start maternity program. Always working to keep you healthy." Also, followed by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield logo. In a subtle shift of context the third spot, "Training," takes us behind the scenes, where a personal trainer pushes the arm to be "the biggest and the best." It's clear that the blue arm works hard to maintain its position at the top of the health care industry as a fast "Rocky"-style montage shows it doing curls, cable pulls, punching drills and pushups. The spot concludes with the trainer looking away embarrassed as the arm fails to catch a medicine ball he's enthusiastically thrown to it. For "Car," Northern Lights provided the editorial and on-set supervision while newcomer Mr. Wonderful supplied a variety of visual effects. The VFX team worked with the agency to previsualize all effects shots so they could be discussed and carefully planned prior to production. On set, editor David Gioiella supervised the rigging of the car, the green screen elements and took all necessary measurements needed to do the match moves. In "What Are You About?" Mr. Wonderful created text that appeared as though it were running through a flickering projector to give it an organic feel. Beirne Lowry, Creative Director of Mr. Wonderful, designed the look of the type and developed various techniques to blend the text into the background. The text also needed to be tracked to each shot and in some instances roto work was needed to place it behind foreground elements. There were also certain scenes that required displacing the text to create realistic distortions through glass. Visit the Northern Lights Post Website |
